Simple Pictorial Routine Charts

Last weekend I finally completed what I had wanted to start before we moved, pictorial routine charts for the younger children.
As we all have new chores and I am really trying to get the younger children to be self directed in the mornings, so hard for them especially after the move to know what to do with their time.

I spent a couple of hours cutting out and colouring (my favourite part) these simple charts for them to use each day.

I found some old pictorial chores and ideas from a long time ago that were not too large and photocopied them again. I simply choose the ones I wanted to use and then cut them out, put them into four piles, one for each child according to what they needed
I then used a thicker grade parchment look paper and folded it in half, A4 size that is. I drew on the front a simple picture with crayons. I love these crayons, they are cheap 50 cent crayons and are the best I have ever found. They colour beautifully and dare I say it I may like them better than our bees wax one, well maybe!
I then laid them out on the inside of the card and placed them in order for morning, lessons  lunch, Dinner chores and cleanup and evening preparation. I then glued them in very easily.
We also added in some exercise and free reading and I have reintroduced a ' service of love' that each child is asked to do everyday for another person. If they cannot think of something they come to me and I give them an idea or they can do an act of love for me, like a job I need doing or helping with someone etc.

So far the children are doing very well with these as they can look where they are up to and know if they have free time.
It also helps me to know if they need help with anything and I can guide them to the chart without an argument about doing something.
If it is on the card they that is what needs doing, no debate about not being told about!

I think as we need new chores we can just glue a new picture over the old one, but the structure will remain the same. Simple and easy I love it!

Blessings to you and your homes,

Hobbit Day or Bilbo's Birthday Plans

As this year is the 75th year of the release of the Hobbit book and the fact that the movie is released in December there seems to be a great many opportunities available to celebrate this day.

In the past years we have concentrated on the fact that 22nd of September was the birthday of both Bilbo and Frodo. This year I think it will be a more Hobbit themed idea, well mostly.
This was our first impromptu Hobbit theme birthday
The year we made a quest (treasure hunt with items to collect)

Last year we went on a trip interstate and tried to keep journals of our adventure

In preparation for our day on Friday we came up with these ideas~
First off you need invitations to the party, we are making ours in old style with a little bit of elvish writing or old dwarven runes on part of them. Or here is a runic translator for you
Of course you need to have a Hobbit name and this name generator will set you up
Decorations are a must and consist of streamers, balloons, a birthday sign, a party tree (if you can), bunting around your celebration area.
Glow Stick Lanterns these are going to be such fun to have and to make. Simply find a jar, some glow sticks and then cut the glow sticks into the jar (add glitter if you like) put the lid on and shake.
Do not make too far in advance though as they don't last that long
Glow Jars
For fireworks we have sparklers and party poppers (sadly no fireworks permit for us)

Music for dancing or listening, my preference is good Celtic music or some old English folk melodies

Watching this old movie and the new trailer also the party scene from The Lord of the Rings
Games are lots of fun. our list includes charades, blind man's bluff, musical chairs, quoits, riddles, poem memorization, murder in the dark (cause of the cave scene), scavenger hunt here is a trivia question game
charades
Food is very important and we have made up this list of essential foods for us to consume over the day~
First Breakfast -Of course there will be mushrooms, with sourdough fried bread, eggs, bacon and tomatoes
Second Breakfast - strawberries with cream,
Elevenses -scones with jam and cream
Luncheon -potatoes , onions and apples
Afternoon Tea - Apple pie and custard
Dinner -meat pies, cold cuts, pickles and eggs
Supper -cheese, crackers, tea and coffee
Drinks -Ginger beer, honey and lemon drinks

Here are some fantastic recipes if you have the time or inclination to try them
An invitation below with other great ideas

Spring Fairies

As we settle into new life here in Wagga and setting up the new house we finally exchanged our Winter theme for a Spring one.  Son't you just love the Spring Fairies? They are so much fun to make!

Believe me when I say Spring is really here this far north and I am enjoying it and the children are sooooo very keen to get into the pool as soon as possible. They look out the kitchen window each morning and just bask in the Summer possibilities.

Next week we are hoping to get started back into lessons, even though we are still not completely organised. In fact my desk and other lesson essentials are still in Melbourne waiting to be shipped here.

I am really looking forward to starting some Spring themed activities from the Spring book I had in my giveaway recently.

The younger children are really searching for some structure and the big kids are saying they need to do  some more constructive work which to them means lessons.
They are starting some new English based work that we bought before the move and are anxious to get started on them.

With the start of new themes and chores next week I hope to get some more time for relaxation and crafts and perhaps some more blogging too!!

A Morning Routine!

A morning routine is something I think is vital in our home!
We actually have a few parts of a morning routine but the one I think is the most important is our Breakfast  morning routine.
We have over the years not been consistent with our breakfast routine BUT when we are the benefits are evident in the way our days proceed are well worth the effort.
Sadly there have been times when we have not participated in this morning routine and I feel when we don't we have a  lack of family closeness. The same thing if we miss our  family time of an evening routine too.

The main part of this is to actually sit down to breakfast together as a family or if Daddy is already at work with Mummy and the children.
I must admit this was a lot easier when we were not grain free as the staple breakfast menu was usually cooked porridge withe warm drinks even in the summer! If we did not have porridge we had boxed cereal.

This actually made the process easier as we could have it all ready together and sit together.

However we still mostly try to do this, even as we are trying to cook a hot breakfast or have smoothies.
One of the essentials in having a clean start with this routine is to set the table the night before- complete with the books.
This allows for a quicker start without scrabbling for plates, mugs and other bits n pieces for breakfast.

As we are almost at the end of the meal that is when we start THE BOOKS!

The books you ask? Oh yes this is one of the most important parts of the routine.

At this point I start to read from the books~
*The first being from one of our Children's Bible Story books. Our current one is My Big Book of Catholic Bible Stories.
*Next I read about the Saint of the Day from The Catholic Parent Book of Feasts or if no saint is in this book from The One Year Book  of Saints
*Our Next book is The Book of Virtues or The Moral Compass mostly or I have used other books in the past both Catholic based or uplifting Christian
* We also use Our 24 Family Ways, (although ours is a first edition and has a flip top stand to place on the table) as a guide for family behaviour and expectations.
* After this one of the children will pray for our day, bringing family as well as private concerns and petitions to The Lord, then we say our Grace after Meals and go off to the next part of our day......Chores.

This I believe truly sets the tone for our day together as a family!

Our Olympic Ideas to Share.........

In typical learning fashion in our home with the Olympics coming up it certainly required us to brainstorm some of our  favorite types of activities to celebrate and learn with for the event.

Of course we are late in sharing our brainstorming ideas but here they are anyway~
Themes are nothing in our home without the required dressing up as a particular person or representing anything......and so each of the children choose a country to study and then researched the traditional clothing for that country and tried to replicate this.
Here are our ideas we threw together quickly one day:
* obviously choose a country to learn about and to cheer for.
* make a flag for the country of your choice to barrack with
* research about the country and record your information
* choose a national dish both main and desert and we will attempt to cook it
* dress in national dress for the opening ceremony and have flag ready
Interestingly enough while Stephen and I ran some errands later in the day Father John our Parish Priest came visiting with Father Augustine  who is our new Nigerian Priest to introduce him to our family .The children were still finishing off their flags when they arrived.

I was so pleased the children showed hospitality to the priests while we were out and asked them in for coffee and a chat. Father John explained to Father Augustine that we home educate our children and then suggested to the children they make Father Augustine a Nigerian flag.

Of course the children were thrilled at the idea, but it was Rogan who was most keen to make it. Not only did her make one for Father Augustine but made the Lithuanian flag for Father John whose parents immigrated from there. We took them to Mass on the Sunday and Father John was so thrilled that he was thought of too.
I just love this photo of Corbyn. He decided he had to come as an Aussie Stockman after we showed him the Opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics.
On with the ideas though~
*research the history of the Olympic Games
* make a map of London and where the events are being held
*read Asterix at the Olypic Games
* keep track of medals for both Australia and your favorite country
* make medals from clay and paint them or  sculpy
* watch what we can of the games
* Play these games for Tiny Time Games to print, cut and play
* make and obstacle course using the sports as the challenges
* make cupcakes and then ice them with the colours of the Olympic flag
* make Olympic rings out of clay or sculpy
* make the Olympic flag using calico and then draw on with crayon and set with a hot iron
These are not very complicated or very clever ideas. I am sure there are a lot more out there that you could use as well, but for us this will be plenty and we may not even do all these.
As you can see the children did dress up in what they could find of national costume
As it turned out, little Trahaearn was asleep when we did this and so his adorable little Chinese costume will have to wait until the Closing ceremony
You know there is always some one who won't join in at the last moment and Arwen just would not get into the scheme of things this time
I would be interested in hearing how you have celebrated or learned different things about the  2012 Olympic Games!

Blessings to you and your homes,

A Lifestyle of Learning ....yes that's Home Education!

“I am resolved to be a good mother to my children, to pray for them, to set them good examples, to give them good advice, to be careful both of their souls and bodies, to watch over their tender minds; to carefully root out the first appearing and buddings of vice, and to instill piety, virtue and true religion into them.“
Eliza Lucas Pinkney

Lately I  have been thinking about our lives as a home educating family. I guess it must be all the back to school talk form my US friends.
As we are about half way through the year here we are really into our stride, well as much as we can be with a large family and all the distractions

I also was thinking of how much we have changed over the years too and truly have grown into the Home Educating lifestyle. Really this has been a lifestyle for so long that I can't imagine life any other way, but the reality of the issue is that we DO NOT school at home.
In fact we do not come close. Instead we life a lifestyle that promotes education in the home environment.

What does this mean?
It means that we go about our learning on an everyday basis with the family structure being the core of our curriculum.
Yes, the way our family culture exists means that we do things together as a family. We eat, sleep, play , pray and learn right along side each other. This constitutes our learning.

You may be saying something like this "that doesn't sound like the children are learning anything at all" or "sounds like you are unschoolers to me"

I would have to say that no, we aren't unschoolers BUT yes we are very relaxed about things now. Yes, we do follow through plans and routines for learning. I have plans and ideas on a whole other blog (sadly I haven't updated on the day to days recently) and I even  record on this blog some of the things we do.
We do not follow what I call a 'canned curriculum' but I tend to pull together interests and ideas that are interesting for our children and try to encourage them to follow those interests that they desire.
I will change a resource if a child particularly does not relate for it BUT then there are other times I insist they follow through. This usually happens when I am sure they just find it difficult or are being less than enthusiastic about their studies.

All in all I really think it is knowing your children and each of their particular strengths and weaknesses and encouraging them in their weaknesses and helping to strengthen those already strong areas.

You won't find everything we do to educate our children on either of these sites though.
The reason being  I do believe in the the statement at the start of this post as being a most thorough statement of a great education.
When I focus on these ideals it ensures that I provide the tools and resources for our children to enrich their lives with  the education they need for ensuring their ability to continue education them selves on a life long journey.

As we have discovered in our later years that we have some more challenging issues with learning for some of our children I really do believe that learning at home has guaranteed them the best opportunities for learning to their best ability.

I also believe that continuing my own learning in being open to new opportunities myself show the children that yes, you can continue to be educated at any age. You can continue to expand your horizons and not be forever stuck where you are. So when I find it hard to learn a new skill whether it be a new craft or research I am reminded that this is a life long journey and I am so pleased to be able to share it with the children.

As I was looking on Facebook the other day I saw this article and was struck with how sad it must be for children to be continually expected to not do their best, but to be performing at more than 100% all the time. It certainly does not allow a child or adult for that matter to be able to actually really learn but simply to sill in the blanks to get to the nest level with out any of the enjoyment of really obtaining knowledge.

What a poor example and lifestyle for our children if this is the sum total of education.
How I pray that I can give our children the tools that will allow them to be the very best person they can be at what ever God has called them to. To encourage them that perfection is not the goal to strive for but the ability to do the best with what you have and to use those gifts for the benefit of others as well.

I hope to share (given time restraints) some of the styles of learning we use and the reason why we combine these together into our own unique family learning!

Winter Solstice - Ideas, Plans and more

King winter sat on his throne one day
And he said to himself, said he:
" I must admit I've had some fun,
I've chilled the earth and cooled the sun,
And not a flower or tree
But wishes that my reign were done.
As long as time and tide shall run
I'll go on making everyone,
as cold as cold cane be"

Tomorrow (today as I publish this) is the Winter Solstice for us and this year I am actually semi prepared before the day. Well at least I have a few ideas for us to celebrate with, although perhaps not all the materials for each of the crafts I can think of.

Some of the themes that spring to mind that we will perhaps explore are obviously to do with light and warmth.

Therefore we will be looking to make and/or display these  ideas throughout the day.
* We will have our fire on to warm the family room where we gather mostly
* we will be reading from our winter book list
* we will light some of our candles and oil lamps that are around our home.
* we will be making chicken and vegetable soup for our evening meal. You really can't go past chicken and vegetable soup for a comfort meal I think.
* we will have a beautifully rich hot chocolate with whipped cream and perhaps a marshmallow or two thrown in.
* Spiced Tea also sounds inviting and here is the recipe:
6 cups of water
1 teaspoon of whole cloves
2 1/2 cm of cinnamon stick
2 tablespoons of black tea or 5 tea bags
1/2 cup of orange juice
2 tablespoons of lemon juice
1/2 cup of coconut sugar or honey

Combine water, cloves and cinnamon. Heat to boiling.
Add tea; cover and brew for 5 minutes, then strain or take bags out.
heat orange juice, lemon juice and sweetener to boiling; stir and add to hot mix
Makes 6 to eight cups.
NB tea can be replaced with apple juice or cider

* make a star wand-
find a piece of dowel or stick from the yard
Cut out paper or felt in a star shape.
Place star shapes together and either partially glue or sew around the edges.
Fill in the centre with some fleece creating a slight puff look
Finish sewing or gluing so it is completely sealed around your stick.
Complete and ready to play ( if gluing you will need to allow drying time)

* make golden starts from gold glitter pipe cleaners and transparent coloured orange and yellow beads.
Simply twist the pipe cleaners into a star shape and then just thread the beads on in alternating colours

* make a little felt gnome and pouch
*colouring pages about winter or solstice
* word searches or word mix ups (I generate these on line) using winter and solstice as a theme.
* make tissue paper snow flakes
* make tissue paper stars for your windows or hanging wreaths.
* make origami stars
* make a paper lantern using wet on wet water painting and then 'oil' it for a transparent effect.
* decorate bees wax candles with cut out shapes
* decorate a mason jar with tissue paper images.
This is done by tearing up tissue paper and gluing on to the jar with watered down pva glue to create the image you like. Over lap the paper to achieve the desired look.

*making a sun banner-
cut five triangles out of calico and sew into a banner.
Draw and colour a sun pattern on each one and embroider with golden yellow, red, orange and gold on the sun pattern

* We will be definitely making some hand cream from beeswax, olive oil and  coconut oil for those winter chapped hands. One of our dear children is suffering from this so it is a number one priority.

* reading aloud and drawing winter images or images of warmer times while sitting around the fire
This is a sweet little story for your little ones:

The Yule Faeries - A Winter Solstice Story
A group of little Faeries huddled in their home deep under the roots of a giant oak tree.
They were safe and snug in their tiny underground cave lined with dandelion fluff, bird feathers, and dried moss. Outside, the wind blew cold and the snow fell softly down to cover the ground. "I saw the Sun King today," the faerie named Rose said as she pulled her mossy cloak tighter about her. "He looked so old and tired as he walked off through the forest.
What is wrong with him? "The great oak said he's dying" answered Daffodil. "Dying? Oh, what will we do now?", Little Meadow Grass started to cry, "If the Sun King dies, our little plant friends will not grow. The Birds will not come and sing again. Everything will be winter for ever!" Lilac, Dandelion and Elder Blossom tried to comfort their friend, but they were all very sad. As they huddled together, there was a knock on the tiny door.
"Open up, Faeries," called out a loud voice. "Why are you hiding instead of joining us in our Solstice celebration?" Rose opened the door and the little gnome Brown Knobby pushed inside, shaking the glistening snowflakes off his brown coat and hat. "We are too sad to celebrate," Daffodil said wiping her eyes, "The Sun King is dying, haven't you heard?" "He is dead you silly Faeries." Brown Knobby's round dark eyes sparkled with laughter. "Now hurry, or we'll be late for the celebration!" "How can you be happy and laughing?!" Elder Blossom stamped her little foot and frowned at the gnome. "If the Sun King IS dead, it will be winter always. We will never see the Sun again!" "Silly little child-Faeries."
Brown Knobby grabbed Dandelion by the hand and pulled her to her feet. "There is a secret to the Winter Solstice. Don't you want to know what it is?" The Faeries looked at him in surprise. "Secret?" they all said. "What secret? We are only new little Faeries, you silly gnome.
We've never been to a Solstice celebration before." "Come and see. Come and see. Get your capes and come with me." Brown Knobby danced and jigged around the room. "Hurry, Hurry, don't be slow! To the forest special place through the snow!" He danced out of the door and disappeared. "What did that gnome mean?" Rose asked as she gathered up her cloak of dried rose petals held together with cobwebs and lined with goose down. "I don't know, but the Forest Lady lives there." Meadow Grass pulled on her hat. "Perhaps if we go to see the Forest Lady, She can explain what Brown Knobby was talking about".
The Faeries left their snug little home and trudged off through the snow toward the forest special place. The forest was dark with only the light of the Moon shining down through the thick fir branches and bare limbs of maple and hawthorn. It was very difficult for them to get through the snow because they were very, very small.
As they waded through the wet snow and shivered in the cold wind, they met a fox. "Where are you going, Faeries?" the fox asked. "To the special place in the forest," they answered, they were cold and shivering. "Climb on my back and I will take you there swiftly." The fox knelt down so the Faeries could climb up. Then he raced off through the dark. "Listen!" Lilac said as they neared the special place "Someone is singing happy songs. A LOT of someones."
The beautiful music carried over the cold, still, moonlit air. It was the most beautiful music the Faeries had ever heard. The fox carried the Faeries right to the edge of the throne in the center of the forest, then knelt down. "Look!" said Elder Blossom as they slid to the snow covered ground. "There is the Maiden and the Mother and the Old Wise Woman, and many other Little People." "They are all smiling and happy," said Lilac as she looked around at all the creatures. "All the animals are here too," whispered Dandelion. "Why are they all looking at the Forest Lady?" The Faeries moved closer to the three Ladies seated around the throne. The Mother held a bundle close in Her arms, smiling down at it. The Maiden reached down and took the Faeries gently in her Hands.
She held them close to the Mother so they could see what She held. "A Baby!" the Faeries cried. " A new little Baby! Look how he glows!" "He is the newborn Sun King," said the Maiden smiling. "But Brown Knobby and the old oak tree said the Sun King was dead," the Faeries answered her. "How can this little baby be the Sun King?" "That is the great secret of the Winter Solstice." The Old Wise Woman touched the baby's cheek with her wrinkled hand. "Every year the Sun King must come to the special place in the forest, during the darkest days of winter where he dies. After this the new Sun King is born. This is the way for all creatures, not just the Sun King." " You mean everything lives and then dies and others take their place? the Faeries looked down in wonder at the baby Sun King, nestled in the arms of the Mother. " Yes, Little Ones," answered the Old Wise Woman.
"There is never an end to life. This is the great mystical secret of the Winter Solstice." The Faeries laughed because they were so happy. "I think the little Sun King should have gifts," said Rose. "I will show him where the wild roses bloom in the early summer." "And, I will teach him to call the birds and listen to the songs of the wind," exclaimed Dandelion. "When he is older and stronger, " said the Mother, "then the flowers will bloom at his touch, the birds will return to sing their songs, and the air will be warm from his breath, and winter will be gone for a time.
Then the Sun King will run and play with you in the forest." The little Faeries sang to the Baby Sun King, songs of the coming spring, the sweet smelling flowers, the bumbling bees, and all the secrets of the forest. And all the creatures within the centre of the forest sang with them. Then the fox took them back to their snug home under the roots of the giant oak tree where they dreamed wonderful dreams, waiting for the warmth of spring and the fun they would have with the little Sun King.

Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart Felt Craft Lesson

I wanted to do a simple craft for our little ones this year for the Feast Days of The Sacred Heart of Jesus and The Immaculate Heart of Mary.
I wasn't sure what I would do except it had to be hands on and quick and simple to do.

This is what I came up with~
Now you don't need to use that beautiful hand dyed wool felt for this craft, you can use the synthetic stuff from Spotlight of a cheap craft store.

I simple free hand drew two red heart shapes and the bits and pieces for each of the two hearts.
Of course you can make these as large of small as you like, and like I said, you don't need to measure just free hand cut as you go.

For the Sacred Heart of Jesus:
A large red heart
I cut a  cross from brown felt.
Orange fire shape
From a different colour brown I cut little 'stick like' rectangles that could be put together to make the crown of thorns
A few drops of blood from the red felt again

For the Immaculate Heart of Mary:
A Large Red heart
Orange fire shape
The sword was the most difficult (not really it is very simple). I cut the blade part from grey felt and then the handle part form brown, over lapping the grey bald part a little. Then I did a very small running stitch to join them with brown thread.
Pink roses- first I cut a circle and then just cut little parts out to make the rose,  flower shape
Tiny little green leap shapes.
Of course I like to give our little ones colouring pages for a feast day and this year we used these ones:
We really liked this colouring page as well as This colouring page. Also this was another I found on line too.
We didn't do this activity page but it is  a really good page for older kids
I also made word search for the children from this site using key words from both the devotions.

I also wanted to be able to talk about the symbolic meaning of the images  and what each part of the image means.
This was actually a bit harder for me as I have never actually thought about it in such detail (naughty me).
This was what I was able to find out: in relation to these particular images
Sacred Heart of Jesus:

Hearts represent love and life. Jesus’ heart beats with the fire of love (at the top of the heart) which was demonstrated at the cross. The fire also represents the purifying fire of God by which he purifies men. It exudes the transformative power of divine love. The crown of thorns brought suffering which was endured for the love of man to redeem him — to bear man’s pain in his own heart. The cut in the heart is that made by the lance that was thrust through his heart when he was on the cross.

The blood dripping represents the new life secured through his death (life came through dead). The result is the heart of man (below surrounded by flowers) is given new life. The flowers represent a garden of delights, new life, freshness. The Garden of Eden which brought about death by sin is now replaced by the Garden of Heaven which brings new life because of holiness.

Adam and Eve experienced death at the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden; The New Adam (Jesus) brings about life at the Tree of Death (the cross) in another garden. This cross is at the top of the heart. Heaven is represented by the clouds and the blazing sun or heavenly light from God behind the hearts.

Immaculate Heart of Mary:

This one is similar to the Sacred Heart. The roses surrounding Mary’s heart represent her sinlessness and purity, sweetness and new life. The seven swords piercing the top of the heart represents the “Seven Sorrows of Mary,” (“Mater Dolorosa”). The first of her sorrows was the Prophecy

of Simeon that a sword would pierce her soul because of her son’s death Luke 2:35), 2) their flight into Egypt, 3) the loss of Jesus in the Temple; 4) the fourth sorrow is Mary watching Jesus carry the cross, 5) the crucifixion imagining a mother watching her son die this way; 6)  receiving his limp, cold body after the crucifixion, 7) the body of her son buried in the tomb.

When Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple as a baby the prophet Simeon said that the life and death of Jesus would be like a sword that would pierce her soul (Luke 2:35). The lower heart, the one of Mary surrounded by roses, shows a cut in it which is symbolic of her sorrows.  But her sorrows have brought us new life and pure hearts represented by the garden of roses below.
Corbyn was so funny to watch as he placed all of the flowers of  Mary's heart. I think he really wanted to give her some love, as flowers really symbolise love in our home.
Myffy working on her interpretation.

I actually think this is good for the children as it gets them to think of how the image is put together.
The children's finished work for the day
When it is all finished for the day it can be neatly placed in a plastic sleeve and filed in a ring binder ready for nest years feast day, or when ever you want to get it out again.
For our actual feast day celebrations we simple set up our display (a previous years craft here as well) and will leave it till the end of the month, as we did for last year

Blessings to you and your homes,

Creative Inspiriation

Creativity and the pursuit of this is one part of our home life that I find most satisfying. Today was an excellent reminder of this and how we can all be inspired by those around us and therefore can help each other in this endeavor.

Autumn decided to get out her painting set and finish off a painting she had been doing for some time.
This in turn prompted my own desire to do some painting and as we have a couple of birthdays coming up I thought I would paint some birthday saints (or course I need to update this post now too)
Of course as soon as I got my paints out Rogan and Arwen wanted to paint too, so out came another set of paints and paper.
While we were doing this Vellvin had already been hand stitching in the room with us and continued on with her work.
Needless to say as soon as Myffwyn saw us all together painting she quickly got some textas AND paints along with her own special book she loves to work in.

So there we all were in the family room, sitting on the floor, in front of the fire (it was a very cold, dull and sort of rainy day here) and I was so thankful that we could do this activity together. Sharing our love of creating, even though we had no intentions of this to start with.
Living a life of home education, where we can follow those interests as we desire, not looking to meet any one else's standards or requirements but loving the satisfaction that comes form pursuing something just for the fun of it is a blessing I can't begin to describe. it opens the door to so many opportunities and what is more we can do this every day!

It just goes to show me time and again how if you fill your life with 'pure, loving and uplifting' activities that the people around will emulate these too.

Blessings to you and your homes,

First Day of School, First Day of School..................

We have officially started back to our studies for 2012. We really had a very nice break over the summer holidays but it really gets to the stage when the children, especially the older ones need some more structured learning every day.
Yes, guess who has 'officially' started this year? That is right our full-on dynamic, never sit still Corbyn. This is going to be a fun year for him, I just hope I can make it interesting enough to grab his attention.
Arwen thought she should hold up the blackboard sign  for all those who probably did not know that this day was the start of another academic year. Hey, kids did you get that yet?
Well we started out slowly with some reading aloud of a few new books: The Journey Begins (Road to Avonlea Series, Book 1)  as well as Bush Boys: An Outdoor Adventure and the A B C of Camping and The Cabin Faced West. I am actually getting them to do more narrations in both drawing form as well as oral  forms.
While the other younger children were working I managed to snap this one of Arwen 'reading' like a big girl.
Of course the day for Corbyn would not be complete with out some form of physical activity. So Scooter riding is just the thing even if it is raining outside.
While reading aloud I have reintroduced the playing with an item to keep your hands busy. So we had some little people have a toy to play with for the reading aloud. The trick with this is to have it chosen BEFORE we start and they each have their OWN individual toy or if the same thing your own particular choices.
This was some of the mess that needed cleaning up after read aloud time..............
On the second day of lessons poor Vellvin sprained her ankle very badly on her morning walk and so had a few days laid up on the lounge to recuperate. She was very diligent though and continued with her studies.
It is a constant reminder to me that little children learn through imitation, as soon as Arwen saw Vellvin all stacked up with her books with her leg on a pillow she started limping around with 'her sore leg' and had to be looked after in the same fashion.
I just love it when we as a family, or most of us, share the same series of books. Over the last few weeks one or more of us have been enjoying The Hunger Games Series. It was interesting to see Autumn and Saxon sitting together reading the same series.

So as we are part way through our second week of 'structured learning', the time travels so fast, we are settling into their new routine of learning and thoroughly enjoying all that comes our way in the way of knowledge!!

Blessings to you and your homes,
